As some Indiana lawmakers drool with greed over Gov. Mitch Daniels' push for privatized toll roads, our great state is getting laughed at elsewhere in the country. A subcommittee of the U.S. House Highway Transportation and Infrastructure Committee held a hearing this week, where road privatization projects were ridiculed by both Democrat and Republican congressmen. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Oregon, raised concerns that states rushing into the privatization P3 agreements might be "taken to the cleaners" -- and he cited as prime examples Indiana and Chicago! Rep. John Duncan, R-Tenn., said road privatization projects are too often "sweatheart deals" resulting in "ridiculous profits" for the companies at the expense of the public. Meanwhile, a new coalition, Americans for a Strong National Highway Network, called road privatization schemes a "pawn shop mentality." At the same time, Colorado is considering a bill to restrict the state from entering into road privatization deals. And here in Indiana? We have state senators actually declaring that they don't care if a privatized road fails or not -- they don't care how many homes and farms get ruined for a new road that won't be used -- as long as they get the money!!!
