The below are just a few writing points. For further information,
see "Illiana Facts" link on this website."
- This will be a privatized toll road.
This type of road funding has already proven to be a disaster in many
cases in the U.S.
- The use of eminent domain for private profit is unacceptable.
- This bill could benefit a giant consortium
of investors outside of Indiana, most likely foreign investors.
- "The swath of toll road running through valuable farm land will
generate too much pollution and won't
cure congestion on the Borman." (quote from Duneland
Sierra Club)
- The bill allows for no actual legislative
oversight. The review committee has no power to regulate
the route or the toll fee. Governor
Daniels and INDOT will have exclusive control over the privatization
of the road and its route.
- The construction will displace thousands
of residents, destroying homes and lives.
- This toll road would destroy thousands
of acres of farmland in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte
Counties. This is also true in the counties affected by the Commerce
Connector.
- The road would increase urban sprawl and be in direct contrast with Porter County's master plan regarding
the southern half of the county.
- This bill will speed up the destruction
of our environment. We are already experiencing a
shortage of corn needed for ethanol. The continued loss of farmland
could destroy one of Indiana's leading industries.
- This bill is being rammed through the Indiana legislature. There
has been no significant time for meaningful
public input.
- The Illiana toll road is not included (East of 65) in Northwest
Indiana Regional Planning Commission's 30 year plan which was updated this past December.
- The Illiana will lead straight to Peotone, likely causing the Gary
Airport to lose business.
- This project is venturing down a path that the State's current
laws don't allow: private enterprise financing construction of roadway
projects. The reason our state forefathers enacted
such a provision in state law was to safeguard the state from losing
control over a public asset.
- Porter and Lake Counties are currently non-attainment (for ozone)
counties. More trucks would only worsen the problem.
